Happy Memorial Day!!

Today is a day of honoring those who have served in our military so we are able to live with the freedom we have today. A lot of people celebrate today by having BBQ, and that’s exactly what the FlavorSmasher team is doing today. It’s the day before my birthday, and I wanted to go out on a little Memorial Day drive. So we packed up our baby girl and took off. On our little adventure, we happened upon this neat BBQ stop in Clawson, Michigan. I present to you the Woodpile BBQ Shack.

This place has a beautiful outside patio that can fit quite a lot of people, and let me tell you there aren’t many empty tables. That alone tells you the place is good even before you get their delicious food. It’s not like a normal restaurant where you sit down and wait for a server, though. When you walk in, you’ll tell them your order and if you’re sitting in or taking your BBQ to go. We took ours to go.

We ordered the Three-Meat combo, which consists of three of their meats and two sides. Above are the two sides we chose – Pepper Jack Mac & Cheese and Roadside Pit Beans. The Pepper Jack Mac is a creamy combination of Cavatappi (or corkscrew) noodles, a creamy cheesy white sauce, chopped bacon and breadcrumbs. Needless to say it was my favorite of the two sides. The Roadside Pit Beans consist of soft and pleasant beans mixed in with pulled pork in a homemade sweet BBQ sauce. For sides, they were rather filling.

This picture makes me want to go back there right now. I’ll start with the Pulled Pork. It has to be the best pulled pork I have ever tasted. It comes without sauce, so I added the homemade sweet heat sauce to it. The flavor gets amplified tenfold with that sauce, which makes it the best pulled pork ever.
Above the pulled pork is the Smoked Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage that I topped with the homemade mango habanero sauce. Now that is a spicy sauce. It brings out the jalapeno flavor even more, which in turn causes your tongue to do a little happy dance when the cheese is added to the party.
Just below that is the Central Texas Beef Brisket topped with the sweet heat sauce. You know I love heat. The brisket is nice and tender, cut to a perfect thickness and cooked perfectly. It has a nice smoky flavor to me, which blows any other brisket out of the park.

The atmosphere of the place is very welcoming, and everyone knows the right atmosphere makes food taste even more delicious. I could tell that even by getting our food to-go. The staff are all wonderful people and take their work very seriously. I don’t think a bad plate comes out of their kitchen. If you’re ever in the area, I strongly recommend this place to you.
